Objective:

To be able to introduce a safe system of work into a rescue situation. To become competent in leading specialist unit members and manage complex rescue systems. To become competent to lead stretcher movements and casualty management rope systems.  To understand legal requirements and emergency procedures within a specialist rescue unit.

Course content:

The Working at Height Regulations 2005.           
Safe Systems of Work.
Methods of Fall Protection.             
Existing Safe Working platforms.             
Anchor identification and selection.           
Movement on rope systems (ascending / descending, passing knots, rope to rope transfer, passing deviations, fixed and mobile aid climbing)   
Fall arrest methods and understanding of suspension intolerance.
Problem solving for Rope Systems on the incident ground.       
Casualty management and movement using stretchers and 'C Spine' immobilisation.   
Risk assessing, identifying hazards and planning the work task.
Leader responsibilities on the incident ground.         
Implementing incident plan dynamically throughout the task.  
Inspection care and maintenance.

Skill base:

Taking charge of Unit Members safety. systems and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) checks.
Understanding practically the use of the energy absorbing lanyards.
Fitting and use of work positioning equipment.       
Correct use of PPE anchors and anchor systems including belay loading limits.
Use of work restraint systems to gain access to exposed edges. 
Ability to access all areas on rope systems.         
Pulley systems and mechanical advantage systems.       
Friction factors.             
Twin line cable ways.    
Tensioned rope systems and horizontal movement of stretchers.
Stretcher attendants and connections.         
Incident ground management.           
Control of the incident scene and equipment management.

Course requirements:

Candidates must show current competence in Rope Operators procedures or produce documentation to show skill level able to undertake the supervisors course.
